Two interesting fact about Mildred Fish Harnack are she translated many books from English to German. Mildred Fish Harnack faced Adolf Hitler and was one of the few who ever did. She was the only America woman ever to be executed by Hitler and the Nazis Party.

Mildred Fish Harnack was born on September 16th in 1902, in Milwaukee Wisconsin. She was born to Georgia and Willam Fish. The birth certificate has the date stamped October 31st, and she is named Matie with no middle name instead of Mildred Elizabeth. Mildred is famous because she is the only American ever excuted by the Nazi’s, they excuted her with the guillotine, Hitler’s excuting machine as they called it. She faced down Adlof Hitler as few ever had or would. That is why we honor her, for her bravery and courage.

Besides being involved in a group called the “Friday-nighters”, she was a member of the French club. After Mildred graduated in 1925, she applied and was accepted into the University of Wisconsin. While she was at UW-Madison she got married to Arvid Harnack. Later they moved to Europe. They settled in Berlin, where Mildred worked at the University while completing her doctorate, and Arvid received his second law degree. Mildred’s passion and devotion to literature continued in Germany in the 1930s and early 1940s through her translations of books and poems (e.g. Goethe) into German and English, as well as her teaching – introducing her students to the likes of Thorton Wilder, Thomas Wolfe and William Faulkner. On September 17,1942 they were arrested. Arvid was sentence to death and executed on December 22,1942 for his role in Red Orchestra an anti-Hitler underground resistance. They attempted to bring the war to an end as quickly as possible. Mildred Fish Harnack was executed by guillotine on February 16, 1943. She was sentenced to death for her role in the Red Orchestra. A couple things that I thought were really cool and interesting about Mildred Fish Harnack is that she was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin. She went to school in Milwaukee. But on her last year of school she went and attended school in Washington D.C. Then she came back to Wisconsin to go to college at U.W Milwaukee. But on February 16th 1943 she was executed and guillotioned by the Nazies.She was executed because she was in an anti-Hitler group or also known as the Red Orchestra.
